Sander de Klerk

For over five years, Sander de Klerk has been engaged in an ongoing exploration of silk paper collage. This delicate medium, with its inherent fragility, offers an ever-shifting interplay of detail and chromatic nuance—effects that emerge unpredictably in the process of creation. The spontaneity afforded by the technique—where layers can be applied and removed with immediacy—invites a dynamic freedom, enabling a continual reimagining of form and composition. As a result, De Klerk’s body of work encompasses a rich variety of styles and thematic explorations, unified by the distinctive presence of silk paper as a constant thread.

A graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven (2000) and a creative designer for nearly two decades, Sander de Klerk (b. 1975, NL) transitioned into full-time artistic practice upon relocating to South Africa (2018–2020). His early paintings were swiftly embraced by galleries and collectors in Johannesburg and Cape Town, providing a strong foundation for the evolution of his practice.

Since returning to Europe in 2020 and settling in Belgium, De Klerk has expanded his material vocabulary, ultimately gravitating towards the expressive potential of silk paper. Years of experimentation have enabled him to refine his technique and develop a distinctive visual language that is both intricate and immediately recognizable.
